Deviant Behavior will introduce students to sociological concepts and contemporary issues within the sociological field of deviance: labeling, embodiment, identity, behaviors, and criminality. We will analyze the labeling process of behaviors that fall outside of the statistical norm and the sociological impact of being so labeled. Students will learn how to analyze academic articles, documentary film, lead classroom discussions, write critical short essays, and utilize web 2.0 tools to facilitate discussions and contribute content for the course. Sociology of the Family will introduce students to sociological concepts and contemporary issues within the sociological field of the family such as defining the family structure, media representations, identity, sexuality, domestic violence, immigration, and globalization. We will analyze the family as a social institution that is mediated by other institutions such as the state, the medical establishment, the law, the media, and culture. Students will learn how to analyze academic texts, documentary film, lead classroom discussions, write critical short essays, use visual methods, and utilize web 2.0 tools to facilitate discussions and contribute content for the course.

I have just returned from the International Visual Sociology Association 2011 conference, held on the beautiful University of British Columbia campus in Vancouver, BC. I presented on Covered at the conference (my panel “Visual Ethnography” in picture).

Embodied Resistance: Challenging the Norms, Breaking the Rules

On May 24, 2011, Covered screened at Spokane Falls Community College, in Spokane, Washington. The director Beverly Yuen Thompson was there, as well as tattooists  Charissa Vaunderbroad and Constance Eller. Check out the photos here.
